Changes to free school meals and what it means for you

Herman

Herman, senior marketing executive

From September 2026, free school meals are changing, which could open the door for families who haven’t been eligible before.

If you receive Universal Credit, there’s now a strong chance your child could qualify.

Previously, an income cap meant many families missed out, even when finances were tight. That cap is being removed.

Simply, if you receive Universal Credit, you can qualify.

Even a small amount could make a difference

Recent changes to Universal Credit, including updates linked to the two-child limit, mean more families now receive at least some level of support.

Even if your Universal Credit entitlement is as little as £1, your child may still be eligible for free school meals.

So, if your circumstances have changed, or you’ve only recently started receiving Universal Credit, it’s worth taking another look at what you could access.

What this means financially

This isn’t a small benefit. Free school meals could save you around £495 per year, per child.

When to apply

Applications open from 1 June 2026, giving you time before the new school year in September.

People often miss out, not because they don’t qualify, but because they don’t apply. If you're unsure, don’t leave it. If you’re reading this and thinking:

“Do I actually qualify now, even if I didn’t before?” or “Is there something I should be checking but haven’t yet?”

Please don’t sit with that uncertainty. Our financial inclusion team is here to support you.

That doesn’t just mean helping with a form. It means:

  • understanding your situation
  • checking everything you’re entitled to
  • supporting you through applications
  • making sure nothing is missed

More support could be available

In many cases, free school meals are just one part of a bigger picture. If you’re eligible for this, there’s a strong chance there may be other support available too, support that could ease pressure day to day.

And you don’t have to wait until things feel unmanageable before reaching out.
