Stay safe using fireworks
Nic Green, senior marketing executive
Setting off fireworks, whether to celebrate Diwali, bonfire night or New Year’s Eve, is an occasion many of us look forward to with family and friends.
If you decide to put on your own display, there are some key safety and environmental factors to consider that will help protect you and others
Safety advice
From setting up to the explosive finale, staying safe should be the number one priority.
- Keep fireworks in a cool, dry place before use.
- Only ever use fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from buildings, trees, and anything flammable. Spectators need to be at least 15-20 meters away from where fireworks are being lit.
- Prepare a stable area of ground to set off fireworks and keep a bucket of water close by for an emergency.
- Follow the instructions on the firework carefully and only set off one at a time, moving back quickly. Never ever go back to relight a dud!
- Supervise children using sparklers. Make sure they are wearing gloves.
- Soak all used fireworks and any duds in water, place in a bag and dispose of in your litter bin.
Environmental considerations
From disgruntled neighbours to traumatised pets – think about the effects of fireworks on those around you.
- Fireworks can be severely distressing for pets. Consider low noise options that are now readily available.
- Be mindful of your neighbours, especially elderly people and those with young children. Let them know in advance if you are planning a display.
- Be careful to dispose of any litter after using fireworks.
Fireworks can be great fun – by following these steps, you can reduce the risk of accidents and enjoy making memories!
