Andy, customer apprentice

The challenge
When Andy moved into our Tyneside Foyer service, he was homeless, out of work and very down. He needed stability, confidence and support to rebuild his life.

Our support
While living at Tyneside Foyer, Andy showed real dedication to improving his situation. Our colleagues recognised his potential and supported him to apply for an apprenticeship with us.

With encouragement and guidance, Andy was successful and joined our Health and Safety team. He settled in brilliantly and felt welcomed and supported.

“Every single person that I work with has been so kind. They’ve taken the time to talk to me and help me. If I could put it into one word, the support I’ve received has been very nurturing.”

We then supported him to move into his own home, helping him take the next step towards independence.

The impact
Andy said: “Having a routine again has done so much for my mental health and confidence. In fact, it has been beneficial for almost every aspect of my life.”

What changed
Andy’s journey shows how supported housing, belief in people’s potential and access to opportunity can help customers move from crisis to stability.

Katie Fitzsimmons

Katie, former customer apprentice

The challenge
Katie was a Home Group customer who almost didn’t apply for an apprenticeship. She was worried she was too old and wouldn’t be given a chance. Growing up on a council estate as a young single mother, she understood the challenges many customers faced. She didn’t initially see herself as someone who could build a career in housing.

Our support
We supported Katie into an apprenticeship as a housing manager. We encouraged her to believe in her abilities and recognise the value of her lived experience. Throughout her role, she was trusted and empowered to go above and beyond in supporting customers, particularly during the pandemic.

Using her knowledge and compassion, Katie:

- Helped signpost customers to other organisations
- Collected and delivered food hampers to those in need
- Used her lived experience to connect with and support others

Her commitment and impact were recognised when she was named Most Outstanding Apprentice 2021.

“I realised I could actually make a difference to people’s lives and help in ways I never had the power to do before.”

The impact
Katie thrived in her role, gaining confidence and developing skills that enabled her to support others in meaningful, practical ways.

“It just proves you can do anything you put your mind to, and you are never too old to start over.”

What changed
Katie has since continued her career beyond the organisation. Her journey shows how belief, opportunity and support can help customers turn lived experience into a meaningful and lasting career.
